oh hot damn, this is my jam | i’m not afraid of anything → andrea burns
short story:
i love love love this song so much and always have for many years, so i thought i’d sing it for you, as i have been wanting to for a while, however haven’t, as my computer doesn’t like my belting at all, but today, i thought screw it! and did it anyway.long story:
i’ve had this queued for a while because i didn’t want to pull focus from anyone else, but this song means a lot to me, and i have always felt i relate to it a lot. it was made to be even more special to me, though, following a series of events last week. you see, i ran into one of my bestest friends at uni, and i hadn’t seen her in person for the longest time. we got to talking about what we’d been up to, and she was in our uni’s theatre group’s production of Macbeth recently, which was fantastic! she then went on to talk about the group, Nuts, and the director, who had just finished auditions for a musical. she then said ‘ahh you would have been so perfect for it i’m going to call her up right now and you’re going to audition for it.’ so, despite my adament protests, she called up the director and organised the audition. i was really panicked at this stage because i hate being unprepared for auditions, but my friend then told me the show was 'songs for a new world’, and i stopped panicking. i had been singing 'i’m not afraid of anything’ for the longest time, and although it’s unprofessional to sing a piece from the musical you’re auditioning for at the audition, i loved the song so much it didn’t matter. and i really, really wanted it. i had been waiting long enough for something like this to happen.after the audition, i was told to come to callbacks the next day which was exciting! i thanked my friend so so much for doing this for me, and for being a part of one of those sorted fated moments in life that you feel like they’re meant to be happening, it’s all just meant to be. the callback songs were 'i’d give it all for you’ and 'stars and the moon’ which i already knew as well, which was handy, because i loved the show so much. it was a bit weird being the only one not doing music or arts or theatre of some kind, (which is part of the reason i usually don’t go for these types of things and part of the reason why i question why i love to sing and why i want to perform so much) but i did my best and thought it went pretty well, but i didn’t get my hopes up because i never do, so they don’t get dashed when my dreams don’t come true.
anyway, the next day, i got a call from the director (who was lovely by the way) and she told me [i don’t know how many of you are familiar with the show, but there are only meant to be four people in it] that they were adding a few more people to the show and dividing up some of the songs a bit [as the storyline is very vague and different characters can be singing other characters’ songs so this is possible] but that i had gotten the part of amy, one of the lead females in the show! i was so excited because it is one of my dream roles and because i get to sing 'i’m not afraid of anything’ in front of an audience! i was so unbelievably grateful she had reopened the auditions for me and i really hope i can do the role justice because i love it so much.
i am so happy and nervous and excited all at the same time and i didn’t say anything until now because there has been a lot of stuff happening on here that i didn’t want to distract from and also i didn’t want to jinx anything! but now, the show’s on a month from next tuesday and i am just a ball of emotions, i really can’t believe that i’m actually a part of something i love so much. a lot of crap has been going down in my life lately and i just needed a change. something to sing about.
i only wish i had known sooner so i could’ve made hannah audition with me, but i hope you’ll still come see if you want, and maybe we’ll do it next time!
wow that was a long speel. but here it is, 'i’m not afraid of anything’. i apologise my computer’s reaction to my belting, it was a bit loud at times. i hope you think it’s okay though, because ahhh i’m actually going to have an audience! oh and also, it’s a really beautiful show for those of you who don’t know it, you should check it out!
